Andrea Kayne has taught women — from police officers in Chicago to educators in Beijing — how to thrive in any workplace environment. In her new book, KICKING ASS IN A CORSET, the leadership expert identifies the six core virtues of novelist Jane Austen’s heroines — confidence, pragmatism, diligence, integrity, playfulness, and humility — and shows how they form the basis of internally referenced leadership. That is: cultivating the ability to direct one’s focus internally, rather than on external forces. Get to know Andrea and tap into your Austen Powers.

I think EQ is as important as IQ. I do feel we become better leaders when we can talk about what we don’t know, what we’re afraid of, share our vulnerabilities and go inward instead of going upward.
Adam Mendler interviewed Andrea Kayne for his Leadership Blog

More than 200 years ago, at a time when women in England had very few rights, Jane Austen wrote novels featuring strong, intelligent women with principles. Certainly, they had their faults and, of course, romance does play a central role in all of her novels but the thinking, feeling, authentic women she created have inspired readers for generations.
Andrea Kayne also believes they can inspire leaders. She is director of the doctoral program in educational leadership at DePaul University in Chicago and the author of “Kicking Ass in a Corset: Jane Austen’s 6 Principles For Living and Leading From the Inside Out.” In this episode of Talk of Iowa, host Charity Nebbe speaks to Kayne about her new book.

For women in the workplace, today’s episode will soothe your soul. I got to have a conversation with leadership professor and author of Kicking Ass in a Corset, Andrea Kayne. Andrea happens to be a Jane Austen junkie, so a lot of her work and teaching finds answers to many modern day problems and challenges in the pages of Jane Austen novels – everything from the pressure to be likeable to financial inequity in the workforce. Today on THRIVE, Andrea is taking us to class and giving practical tips and exercises to use on the job and in your life, from developing your own leadership skills to communicating merit to your boss. We also talk about finding confidence on the inside and how to root yourself in that instead of chasing external validation, AND we talk about the importance of rest and how to practically make that happen without guilt – even with the busiest of schedules.

Today we’re speaking to Andrea about her book and exploring how a writer who lived 200 years ago in patriarchal, misogynistic rural England can teach today’s leaders.
